You will use the Deutsche Bahn to get to this area of Bavaria. To get to Peißenberg or Hohenpeißenberg by train, you will need to transfer in Weilheim. The trip from Munich to Weilheim is about 40 minutes and the trip from Weilheim to Peißenberg and Hohenpeißenberg is 10 and 15 minutes, respectively.

From the train station in Peißenberg head to your right (in the direction of Schongau, further away from Weilheim) on the road parallel to the train tracks. About 500 meters down this paved road you will need to take a right, across the tracks, down a road that has several signs leading to the “Bergwerkmuseum” (Mining Museum) and a arrow-sign reading “Hummig Effects,” a small business located down the road. Turn down this road, bear right, and follow it up the hill. After about 500 meters, you will find yourself in the parking lot of a community center. Stay to your left, along the side of the hill, until you come to a marked path leading up the hill you have been walking next to, this is the trailhead. Right before the entrance to the hiking trails there is a map of the trails in the area.

Heading up the trailhead will give you three variations of trails (P1, P2, and P3) leading to Hohenpeißenberg. All three trail start up the same, relatively steep, trail. About 500 meters up you will come to a crossroads with clearly marked signs. From here, you can choose your path. They will all eventually lead you out to the paved road, there is a walking path on the side, and after about 800 meters, you will reach Hohenpeißenberg.

On P1 and P3 you will pass through a small collection of buildings known as Sankt Georg. It is worth a look inside the Sankt Georg church and if the doors are not open, you can ask the neighboring house for a key, the owner will gladly help you out. Shortly after the church the P1 and P3 break apart. P3 takes you into the woods a bit and you get some great views of the surrounding area. P1 will keep you on the paved road.

P2 is the most direct way to get to Hohenpeißenberg (4.6 km), and you will encounter this option as you are following the P1 trail. P2 is a mix of paved road and paths through fields. There are times when the trails go right through fields that are privately owned. Just make sure to stay on the path as you walk by houses and farms.

It will be very obvious when you reach Hohenpeißenberg, as the road literally ends, and you will find yourself in a small collection of buildings, one of which is the Mariä Himmelfahr Church. You can also walk around the perimeter of the weather station, located on the west end of the mountaintop.

You have two options:

1. There is a sign in the middle of the town, very close to Beim Kramer Cafe, pointing toward “Ortszentrum, Bahnhof, Bushaltestelle” (Town center, train station, bus stops). Follow this path and it will lead you directly to the center of town from where you should follow signs that lead you to “Bahnhof” (train station).

2. If you follow the trail that leads you around the weather station it eventually breaks to the left, down the mountain and into the town Hohenpeißenberg. Follow the road you are lead onto and then turn left on the a road called “Hauptstraße.” About 700 meters down Hauptstraße you will take a right on a “Bahnhofstraße.” This road will lead you directly to the train station.
