To get to Bad Tölz you will take the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB). BOB trains divide mid-journey, and you must get on the section of the train labeled “Lenggries” to reach Bad Tölz. The same train will also continue to Untergries (accessible from the train stop Gaißach) and Obergries. Remember to stamp your ticket before you board.
When you arrive in Bad Tölz, you can continue on to Gaißach and Obergries by train.
From the train station at Obergries (two stops down from
Bad Tölz in the direction of Lenggries) it’s a bout a 40 minute walk. Leave the train station, and walk about 50 meters in the direction of Lenggries until you reach Obergriesstraße (the first street you will see). Take a right, crossing the tracks, and take another right (Isarstraße) as to walk parallel with the Isar, heading toward the direction of Bad Tölz (north). Walk about 200 meters and then take a left over Bundesstraße toward a foot bridge that will take you over the Isar River. Cross the bridge and walk straight into the middle of the village Arzbach, from where you will see signs pointing you in the direction of “Beindlhof.” The signs will lead you to a street called Lain (Lain is the name of that area of the town). And you will easily find yourself at the quaint farmstead with an astonishing variety of mostly organic, locally made, ice creams.
If you are looking to get a bit of exercise in the area, one option you have is to take the train just one stop after Bad Tölz to Gaißach and walk through rolling pastures to the farmstead Beindlhof. From the train station in Gaißach, head south on ''Bahnhofstraße'' and then make a left on a road called ''Wetzl.'' The road ends in about 300 meters, from where you will turn right (south) and walk on the paved road for about 40 minutes. The road eventually turns into “Unterreuth” and then into “Oberreuth.” You should look to turn right (west, toward the Isar) when you reach either a road called “Schalchern” or, a bit further, “Kellern.” It really doesn’t matter when you head west. Just follow along the Isar until you reach Obergries and can access the footbridge over the Isar River to the village of Arzbach, where the ice cream can be found.
What a treat it is to get a taste, literally, of a working farm in the rolling pastures of Bavaria. Frau Kniegl's farmstead, named Beindlhof, produces an amazing assortment of flavors (100 in all) of ice cream. Many of the ingredients are organic and of course the milk comes from the cows on the farmstead itself. All ice cream is self-service.
