In and around Tegernsee

Getting there and back

There are hourly direct trains from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Tegernsee and from Tegernsee to Munich. The best train ticket to buy is the BOB Ticket, which will cover all your train use for the day. The trip takes an hour each way.

Remember to stamp your ticket before you board an be sure to be in the right section labelled "Lenggries" - trains will be divided mid-journey.

Galaun Guesthouse and Riederstein Chapel

This is an undemanding hike that is easily accessible from the train station in Tegernsee. From the train station make a right onto Bahnhofstraße, which leads you toward the middle of town. Keep walking straight on the road until you reach Lärchenstraße. Make a left onto Lärchenstraße and then after about 50 meters make another left onto the relatively steep Klein-Berg-Straße. Follow Klein-Berg-Straße straight up until you come to a fork. Straight ahead of you, you will see a post of signs pointing to different hikes in the area. Follow the signs pointing to “Galaun” and “Riederstein.” (You can actually go either left or right, turning left is a more direct, although slightly steeper, option). Turning left, and following the signs, you will make a right on Auerweg and follow the road, which turns into a path, all the way to the guesthouse Galaun. Here you can eat or get a drink on a beautiful deck with a great view of Tegernsee and the surrounding area. If you are up for continuing on to Riederstein with its picturesque chapel atop a cliff, just follow the signs up the path from Galaun.. It is not far, and with excellent views, well worth it

Tegernsee

Since around 1920 Tegernsee was known to the inhabitants of Munich and northern Germany as an upper-class vacation town. It is located directly on Tegernsee Lake, which provides great views across to the mountains and surrounding villages. The town itself is quaint and nicely organized, with a tourist center right in the middle of town. Truth be told, Tegernsee has recently had trouble sustaining its tourism industry, as it tends to be very exspensive and caters to a dwindling market of wealthy senior citizens. The town does look nice, but is largely designed to fit the traditional southern Bavarian look. One street that is particularly designed is Rosenstraße, where you will find reconstructed examples of Bavarian mural painting and architecture. One building in particular on Rosenstraße, “Beim Stroh am Alpbach,” is a beautifully renovated (and heavily designed) Bavarian-style building. And of course, there are hiking options for tourists on the hills directly behind the town and in the surrounding area.

Olaf Gulbransson Museum

From the train station make a right onto Bahnhofstraße. Walk about ten minutes until you reach Rosenstraße, on your right. Go down Rosenstraße until you reach a small pedestrian path called Kurgarten, on your left (there is a sign pointing to Olaf Gulbrannson Museum). Walk over a footbridge, past the health center, and you will see a modern building, which is partly underground, with “Olaf Gulbrannson Museum” on the front.

The Olaf Gulbrannson Museum features work from the Norwegian artist Olaf Gulbrannson. The museum originally was opened in 1966, and a new very modern addition was opened in 2010. Olaf Gulbrannson is especially known for his cartoon drawings that were featured in the celebrated German magazine “Simplicissimus.” The magazine, which ran between 1896 and 1967, was known for its brash and politically daring content. A number of the original works are featured in the museum. There are also temporary exhibitions of various artists' work. There is no information available at the museum in English, but a translation is hardly necessary to appreciate the artwork.
