Town Information
Murnau
more than castle and Münter
This small but lively city is located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, between two lakes, Stafelsee and Riegsee. It only takes a few minutes to walk from the train station to the town center and the entire town is well marked with signs, pointing you to every attraction the town offers.
The Castle Museum (Schloßmuseum) offers a comprehensive overview of the Murnau landscape and the surrounding natural environments as well as overview of the local history. The museum is located on a hill overlooking the town in a castle of sorts. There is information, as well as tours, in English.
The Münter House, also known as the Russian House, is a cottage-style home that was once occupied by artists Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky between 1909 and 1914. Some of the works that were part of Der Blaue Reiter “The Blue Rider” publication were thought up and produced in the uniquely styled Münter House. Take note the house is only open for entrance after 2 pm.
The main streets in the town are called Obermarkt Straße and Untermarkt Straße, and although it is pleasing to the eye, it is, like many southern Bavarian towns, designed to have the appearance of age and architectural diversity. Nonetheless, the street makes for a beautiful walk with views of the mountains in the distance. There is also a visitors center located between the train station and the center of town in a modern, large, white building.
